Salt nic or freebase: start with the device you fill

Puff'Dis stocks both freebase vape juice and nic salt e-liquid. Nicotine type is a property of the liquid itself and doesn't depend on flavour or brand. Each bottle contains one type or the other.

You can usually tell the type from the product name. Our salt lines put the word "Salt" in the name: OXVA x Flavour Beast Fresh Pear Ice 30ml Salt, Splashy Peach Raspberry 30ml Salt and Flavour Beast Fruity G Series Green Apple Fruity G 60ml Salt are examples. If "Salt" isn't in the name, check the nicotine-type filter before you assume the bottle is freebase.

Some makers sell separate freebase and salt lines under one family name. Flavour Beast Freebase and the Flavour Beast salt lines (OXVA x Flavour Beast Salt and Flavour Beast 60ml Salt) are different products, even when the fruit on the label looks similar. If you choose by flavour first, you can end up with the right taste in the wrong nicotine type.

Check your device's instructions for a recommended nicotine type before you choose a bottle. If your device calls for salt, our salt nic e-liquid collection shows only salt bottles. If you haven't chosen a device yet, start with refillable vape pods or our vape hardware range, then come back for the liquid.

Nicotine strengths from 0 to 20 mg/mL

Our vape juice comes in nicotine strengths of 0, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 20 mg/mL. Check each product page to see which strengths that bottle is offered in.

mg/mL is a concentration: the milligrams of nicotine in each millilitre of liquid. Bottle size doesn't change it. Here's a hypothetical example: a 60ml bottle at 6 mg/mL and a 30ml bottle at 6 mg/mL have the same concentration in every millilitre. The larger bottle just holds more liquid.

Health Canada sets a maximum nicotine concentration of 20 mg/mL for legal vaping products, which is why 20mg vape juice is the top of our range. If the product you use now lists its strength as a percentage, the Canada Gazette publication of the federal Nicotine Concentration in Vaping Products Regulations gives the same level both ways, as "20 mg/mL or 2%".

To choose a strength, match the mg/mL printed on the bottle you use now, and check the nicotine type at the same time. A 20 mg/mL salt bottle and a 20 mg/mL freebase bottle aren't interchangeable if your device maker specifies one type.

Bottles at 0 mg/mL contain no nicotine. Health Canada requires child-protective packaging for any legal vaping product with a nicotine concentration of 0.1 mg/mL or more.

Bottle sizes, PG/VG markings and the price spread

Product names state the bottle size, and our range includes 30ml, 60ml and 100ml bottles. Salt lines such as OXVA x Flavour Beast and Splashy often come in 30ml. Many lines without "Salt" in the name come in 60ml, and so does the Flavour Beast Fruity G salt series. Vapeur Express listings such as Virginia Tobacco and Berry Mystique are 100ml.

Size isn't a reliable way to tell the nicotine type. Not every 30ml listing has "Salt" in its name, and the Fruity G series puts salt nicotine in a 60ml bottle. Go by the name or the nicotine-type filter, not the volume.

Some listings also show a PG/VG ratio. PG is propylene glycol and VG is vegetable glycerin. A marking like 70PG/30VG gives each one's share of the liquid. Vapeur Express Virginia Tobacco 100ml is listed both with and without a 70PG/30VG marking, and the ratio is the only difference in the two names. If your device maker recommends a ratio, use that to choose between listings like these.

Prices across our vape juice range run from $19.99 to $57.91. Bottles range from 30ml to 100ml, so compare prices only between bottles of the same size. Browsing a single maker, such as Vapeur Express for 100ml bottles, keeps the comparison like for like.

Flavour profiles and what the filters won't tell you

Fruit is the largest flavour profile in our vape juice range. Tobacco, Menthol, Flavourless and Iced are also available as filters. Examples from the range include Flavour Drop Watermelon Honeydew Ice, OXVA x Flavour Beast Fresh Pear Ice, OXVA x Flavour Beast Fresh Spearmint Ice, OXVA x Flavour Beast Fresh Blackcurrant Menthol Ice, Vapeur Express Virginia Tobacco and Gogo Juice Flavourless. The Iced filter and the product names don't line up neatly. Iced is our smallest profile, but many fruit listings have "Ice" in the name, such as OXVA x Flavour Beast Fresh Watermelon Ice and Fresh Mango Passion Ice. The Iced flavour filter may not show every bottle with "Ice" in its name. If you want a cooling note, search for the word "Ice" too.

Menthol and Iced are separate filters, and one product name can include both words, as Fresh Blackcurrant Menthol Ice does. Read the full product name rather than counting on one filter to catch everything you want.

Flavourless describes taste only. The flavour profile tells you nothing about nicotine, so check the strength selector on a bottle in the flavourless profile, such as Gogo Juice Flavourless 60ml. A flavourless bottle isn't automatically nicotine-free.

Reading the label and keeping a bottle at home

Legal vaping product labels must appear in both English and French. According to Health Canada's vaping product safety guidance, the label must list the ingredients, including flavours. A product that contains nicotine must also show:

• a nicotine concentration statement in mg/mL
• toxicity information, including a hazard symbol and a first aid treatment statement
• a health warning message on nicotine

The packaging also carries a vaping excise stamp over the seal.

The same guidance states that vaping liquid containing nicotine is poisonous and that young children are more susceptible to harm from nicotine. Containers of vaping liquid with nicotine must have a child-resistant closure, but child-resistant doesn't mean child-proof, so close the cap securely after each use.

Health Canada gives these tips for handling vaping liquid at home:

• Store vaping liquid out of sight and reach of children and pets.
• Keep bottles in a cool, dry place where they can't be confused for food, drinks or medicine.
• Wash your hands immediately after handling vaping liquid, or wear gloves.
• Never mix household chemical products or additives into vaping liquid.

It also recommends against modifying vaping products or adding substances to vaping liquids that the manufacturer didn't intend. If someone has swallowed vaping liquid, seek emergency medical attention or call 9-1-1. You can also call a Poison Control Centre at 1-844-POISON-X (1-844-764-7669).
